Audiogram captions are more than just a nicety for those who want or need to read along with a video; they’re also a big advantage in the SEO arena and make content marketing so much easier.
So when your podcast audiograms find their way to Youtube, you want captions — and you want them to be on a separate transcription file.
Why Use a Unique File For Your Audiogram Captions?
When you upload your captions and audiograms separately, this allows your transcription to be searchable on Youtube and Google, making you much easier to find.
Because transcriptions placed directly on your audiogram are not searchable, you’ll be missing out on a lot of potential traffic.
People can still come across your video via the title or your selected keywords, but you will reap better results when people find you by searching for your content.
After some time, Youtube will automatically assign subtitles to anything you upload. If you’ve ever seen these auto-captions before, then you’ll know firsthand how unreliable and sometimes silly they are.
If you rely on YouTube’s captions, you’ll have to go in yourself and fix them manually, at least if you want any semblance of accuracy. You won’t have that problem if you’re using the transcriptions we provide.
When you upload your own transcriptions, they will automatically override the auto-captions provided by Google.
3 Steps To Upload Your Audiograms To Youtube
You can repurpose your content to take advantage of this increased searchability in just 3 simple steps. Once you have your files ready, head over to Youtube and do the following:
1. Upload your video
Select your audiogram for upload to your channel. It’s even easier to just drag and drop it from your desktop or folder.
Youtube will begin to process your video, but don’t worry — you don’t need to wait until the process is complete before moving to the next step. Click “done” and then go to your Youtube studio beta.
2. Upload your transcription file
Once there, go to your “videos” section, found on the right-hand side of the screen below “dashboard.”
Click on the video you just uploaded and then select “additional features” from the menu on the right. There you’ll find the option for translations and transcriptions.
Select the “add subtitles” bar, and then select English. This will give you the choice to upload a file. Simply select your transcription file, click “save changes” and you’re good to go!
3. Enjoy your increased searchability!
Again, this process doesn’t attach your transcription to your audiogram. It allows your content to be searchable on the most popular search engine on the planet. Happy podcasting!

Shaina: Hello Again Shaina here we are going to talk today about how to upload your transcriptions to Youtube to make your audiograms searchable. So one thing that you’ll notice when you get audiograms that are landscape, which means horizontal and formatted for Youtube, is that they won’t have the transcription on the actual file and the reason for that is because what you’re going to want to do is actually upload the transcription file into Youtube, which makes it searchable on Google and on Youtube. So if you’ve got audiograms that talk about something very specific, they’re going to be heavily searchable anytime somebody types those terms in to youtube or to Google. So we do that on purpose so that you can get the best benefit out of the audiograms on that platform. So as you’ll see no transcription on the fire. So what we’re going to do is go to youtube. Now, if you’re not already here, you’ll just click this button here. You should know how to upload, but here’s how you do it. Again, upload the video. You just drag and drop it. So after it’s processing, you don’t have to wait till it’s done processing, you can still click done and then you’re going to go up here and go into your youtube studio Beta.
Shaina: All right, you’ll go to videos right here and here we have it. All right, so you’ll click the video, you uploaded the audiogram and you’ll go to missing features. Now down here it’ll show you translations and transcriptions.
Shaina: Now we just uploaded this video so it has an auto populated transcriptions. If you uploaded it and waited a little bit, Google’s going to automatically generate its own transcriptions right here. Now you can use that, but what I can tell you is that a lot of the times are going to have to go in there and make adjustments. The reason we send you your transcription file is because we’ve already done that for you. So we, we make sure that it’s all tight clean. You don’t need to actually double check it. It should be good to go. So you’re going to click add new subtitles or closed captions English and upload a file, choose file, and then here’s the transcription
Speaker 2: and upload.
Shaina: So this little note is just saying that if they’ve already come up with a transcription, whatever you upload in addition to that is going to wipe out the old one, won’t wipe it out, but it will be used instead of it. So that’s good. You want that. So click out of there and now you’ll see that it’s already formatted the way it needs to be and that it’s in the correct order and timing. You can play it and make sure it’s all good, “like weird paradoxical thing”. All right. And then you’ll save your changes. Now that’s not going to actually be on the file, it will be on the file if somebody is looking at the closed captioning. But what it does is it allows you to be searchable in youtube and in Google. So when you go to click play, it’s still not there, which is totally fine. Um, all right? And so then here it is, it’s publishing whatever you’ve already uploaded and you should be good to go. And that’s it. That’s how you upload your subtitles and your transcriptions to Youtube. Happy podcasting!
